Freelance jobs have come to the front as a result of the current economic climate. The number of people who are employed has seen a huge fall in most countries and this has led to a growth in the size of the labor black market and in the freelance market. The labor black market will always be with us. Most of us know at least one person who ‘moon-lights’, having two jobs. One job will be his declared and taxable, the other will be the one that the tax man does not know about and which pays him cash in hand with no questions asked.

What is the definition of freelance jobs?

In their most simple form, freelance jobs are work that can be done by anybody with the right training but they do not take up enough time to justify an employer to have a full time worker to do them. Another way of describing these jobs is ‘self employment’. That does not sound so glamorous but in reality, it is the same thing.

A popular reason many people did not consider becoming a freelance (self employed) worker was the assumed security that having a proper job with a contract and a regular pay check gave them. We have all seen this reason lose all meaning over the past year.

Other reasons to avoid the issue were matters relating to self confidence, the problems of locating suitable work and being able to compete against similarly qualified individuals in what was seen as a small market place. These, too, have lost much meaning over the past year.

Freelance jobs are easier to come by nowadays as businesses seek to cut costs while defending their ability to trade competitively. For many businesses, the biggest and most effective cost-cutting they can do are in the payroll. Business owners are asking themselves if they really need to employ a full time gardener or any other type of employee who does not make a direct contribution to the amount of profit the business creates for itself.

It’s no secret that even before the economic downturn; many companies were already starting to outsource some of their jobs, especially customer service phone support, to places where labor costs are more economical than in their native country. The landscape of opportunities for freelance work has changed dramatically.

Where can you locate available freelance jobs?

When it comes to finding freelance jobs, one avenue to pursue are temporary staff agencies. Often these agencies will look at your previous work experience and test you to find your career strengths. If there are any companies who they are working with that are looking for someone with your skills and abilities they will match you to that employer and arrange for an interview.

There are agencies out there who will find them for you! They are called ‘temporary staff agencies’ and will be able to talk to you and discover what your abilities are and then introduce you to potential clients who might want to buy your services. This is the easiest way to get freelance jobs but, once you are familiar with the way the system operates, you will be able to locate your own freelance jobs, negotiate your own terms and become a truly independent freelancer or self employed person.
