Does Anyone in America Not Have a Computer at Home?

In today?s world of it is near impossible to find a home that does not have a computer in it. A computer is as essential today as a fridge, stove or bed. In this day and age, everything is done on the computer. Even my 2nd grader comes home with homework that he has to do on the computer.

So the question really becomes, how in the world did we ever get along without a computer? This is especially true when it comes to business. How a business ever functioned without it is amazing. To do the accounting of a business by hand would be excruciating to a business today. No business of today would ever pay for someone to manually find accounting errors in the books.

It is beyond question that efficiency in business has improved because of the use of in the workplace. However, have they lost anything because of computer use? Businesses perhaps have not. The American family, however, may be another story. Many families in America are without an employed person in the home. Are to blame? Have hard working Americans lost an ability to provide because of the computer?

We should keep in mind that computers have created a lot of jobs that this country did not have before. There are many technical jobs that have come about due to the computer industry. The computer industry employs a lot of people.

However, we cannot ignore that jobs have been cut because a computer can assist one person in doing a job that used to take 3, 4 or even 10 people. An accountant certainly can do lots more work today by themselves than they use to be able to. Labor jobs have been perhaps the biggest loser as a result of computers and the automated equipment that comes with it.

It may be that if we did a study we would find that jobs lost versus jobs gained due to the computer may come out with a positive gain. However, what we need to look at is the kind of employees that lose their jobs due to the computer versus the kind of employees gained because of the computer. The jobs created by the computer industry are for a much different segment of the work force. The bulk of the jobs lost were those who employed laborers. This causes a large mismatch of skills needed versus those skills that are unemployed.

There was a day, long gone, when a high school graduate could provide for his family by making a living as a laborer. By working hard and staying loyal to a company, these kinds of people earned enough. These are the kind of people who are feeling the effects of the computer age.

So, should we get rid of computer? Is this the answer we need in this country? Of course, this is a silly thought. There is too much good that comes from the computer to say let?s get rid of it. So what is the answer to bridging this chasm? The answer is simply time. It will bridge itself over time, but for those individuals who have been caught in the middle of the divide, perhaps finding an entrepreneur who cares about more than money and partnering up with that person would be the answer.
