As the coming year approaches, young teenagers will be looking for job opportunities for the summer. As the job forecast for 2010 looks similar to 2009, only those teenagers who plan in advance with be finding summer employment. Of course, teens much prefer free time and entertainment so not all teenagers want jobs. However, if it’s necessary for them to contribute to their family’s income or begin saving for college, then summer employment is essential.

The problem is that there are not very many job opportunities for 13 and 14 year old teens. Generally, parents of kids between 13 and 15 encourage their teens to get jobs so they will learn responsibility and what to expect in the adult world. Considering the tough economic times, coupled with few job opportunities for the 13 to 15 year old age group, may mean it will be next to impossible to find employment.

Young teens are very limited by the law as to what kinds of jobs they can get. This is because they need to be protected from doing anything dangerous or hazardous and their safety is the most important. Additionally, there are government restrictions on the hours they can work because they need to remain in school to get an education. During the summer months, the hours they are allowed to work are expanded but they are still limited.

Many companies refuse to hire any teen below the age of 16 because they do not believe them to be mature enough to handle the job, along with the law enforced restrictions. It just is not worth putting these young teens to work for most companies. Also when hiring employees so young, they may be required to have additional insurance to cover them, which adds up to their expenses.

With real jobs very hard to find, young teens find themselves looking for odd jobs around the house and their neighborhoods to make that spending money they want. Babysitting has always been a favorite as has doing yard work and mowing. However, these sporadic jobs are not enough for most teenagers to bring in any meaningful money and they wish there were more ways for them to make money.
