Apple suing makers of shoddy iPhone/iPad accessories – Yahoo! News

Until the conclusion of its recent “Antennagate” debacle was revealed, Apple charged a whopping 29 bucks for an iPhone 4 “bumper,” fancy-pants language for a thin strip of rubber that encases your delicate iPhone to protect it from drops and, of course, the hazards of touching it in the wrong place with your finger.

The net cost to Apple for having a Chinese factory stamp out a bumper is probably on the order of 7 cents. Take into account shipping across the Pacific and we’re still looking at roughly 95 percent profit on the thing.

Sounds like a good business, no? And that’s exactly why dozens and dozens of manufacturers have attempted to ride Apple’s coattails by making accessories of their own for the iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

If done right — timed perfectly and advertised in the right places — accessory manufacturers can undercut Apple’s prices and snap up what amounts to free money.

If done wrong, this is what happens: Apple sues.
